Acupuncture, a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is the insertion of fine needles into points of the body, face and ears. In TCM pain and disease is believed to be caused by a blockage in the flow of energy (Qi) along meridians in the body. Inserting needles into certain points along these meridians frees up that blockage in the flow of Qi, thus reducing pain or alleviating the symptoms of a disease.
In Western medicine we know that the needle insertion stimulates the brain to release endorphins and serotonin. These brain chemicals increase relaxation, improve mood, aid sleep and promote a general sense of wellbeing.
Acupuncture also increases blood flow into tense and painful muscles and is very useful to reduce muscle pain and tension.
An acupuncture treatment can be very relaxing and create a greater sense of wellbeing. There is a small amount of discomfort with the needle insertion, after which there should be minimal to no pain.
There can be a slight bruised feeling where the needle was inserted that can last for up to 24 hours, but that sensation will pass.
You will have needles inserted into various points in the body. Typically this includes the hands and feet, the shoulders, neck and throughout the upper and lower back. Points in the face and ears can also be used. After the needles insertion you can relax. Periodically the needles may be stimulated, which can cause a little discomfort, however, this does improve the treatment effect.
You have two options. You can choose a 30 minute acupuncture session for stress relief , or you can choose an hour where there will also be some soft tissue massage and cupping and the application of hot packs. This is a very relaxing treatment that can promote a deep relaxed state. Take care to drink water after this session and you may need to take extra care if you plan to drive home
The only side effects are that the treatment can be slightly painful and that sometimes the needles can cause very small bruises. The needles are sterile single use needles and are disposed of in sharps bins that are incinerated.

Tomasz Milenda2025-01-20 I recently visited Wandsworth Physiotherapy & Osteopathy and was thoroughly impressed with the professional and attentive service. The team there, particularly my therapist, was knowledgeable and genuinely interested in understanding my specific needs to tailor their treatment effectively. Their approach not only addressed my immediate concerns but also equipped me with valuable insights and exercises to help prevent future issues. The atmosphere was welcoming and calming, which made each session something to look forward to. I highly recommend their services to anyone seeking top-notch physiotherapy or osteopathy care in the area. Georgia Dent2025-01-17 I have only had absolutely fantastic experiences at Wordsworth physiotherapy. Whenever I have gone in with an injury, they have genuinely treated it and made it better. On Wednesday I went in to see the fantastic Kirsty after injuring both my knees running, after 30 minutes with her and the treatment she did I went home and by Friday I was back in the gym completely better, she was genuinely magical. I won’t go and see any other physiotherapist from now on, they are incredible! Curtis Bell2025-01-17 Thank you Shreya! She was attentive and thorough in her investigation and I saw improvements after the first session. Very friendly reception staff and overall positive experience. Maja Jovicevic2025-01-07 Khush listened to my problems and helped. She was gentle but able to apply pressure. I had very bad lower back pain due to hereditary degeneration of my lower disks but after 1 session I was able to walk without tears. Khush was also willing to try out holistic methods such as cupping and lastly gave me a detailed workout/core strengthening plan which is actually challenging!Google rating score: 4.9 of 5, based on 354 reviewsVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
