Diabetic Footcare

At Wandsworth Physiotherapy & Osteopathy, we understand the critical importance of specialised foot care for individuals managing diabetes. Our expert podiatrist, Jack Lidyard, is dedicated to providing comprehensive diabetic foot care to help prevent complications and maintain optimal foot health.

Why Diabetic Foot Care Matters

Diabetes can lead to reduced blood flow and nerve damage in the feet, increasing the risk of ulcers, infections, and, in severe cases, amputations. Regular foot assessments and proper care are essential to prevent these complications and ensure your overall well-being.

Our podiatry team offers a range of services tailored to the unique needs of diabetic patients:

Who Should Have Regular Diabetic Foot Assessments?

Anyone living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes should have their feet assessed by a podiatrist at least once a year, and more frequently if any risk factors are present. You should seek an appointment promptly if you notice any of the following:

Early identification and treatment of these issues is critical. Because diabetes can impair both sensation and circulation in the feet, minor problems that would heal quickly in a non-diabetic patient can escalate rapidly if left unaddressed. Jack’s role is to identify these issues at the earliest possible stage and intervene before complications develop.

Footwear Advice and Orthotics for Diabetic Patients

Appropriate footwear is one of the most important factors in preventing diabetic foot complications. Ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or footwear with internal seams can create pressure points and friction that a patient with reduced sensation may not notice until significant damage has occurred.

As part of your diabetic foot assessment, Jack will review your current footwear and advise on the most suitable options for your foot type and daily activity. Where biomechanical factors are contributing to pressure distribution problems, custom orthotics may be recommended. These are prescribed following a computerised gait scan analysis and are designed to redistribute plantar pressure, reduce friction, and protect vulnerable areas of the foot from repetitive trauma.

Diabetic Foot Care at Wandsworth Town, SW18

Our diabetic foot care service is delivered by Jack Lidyard, our HCPC registered Senior Podiatrist, at our Wandsworth Town clinic on Old York Road, SW18 — a short walk from Wandsworth Town station. Appointments are available Monday to Saturday and no GP referral is required to book. We accept BUPA, Cigna, WPA, Healix, and Allianz private health insurance.

If you have been newly diagnosed with diabetes or have not had a podiatry assessment in the past twelve months, we recommend booking an initial consultation so Jack can establish a baseline assessment of your foot health and advise on the most appropriate monitoring schedule going forward. Early and regular podiatric care is one of the most effective ways to prevent the serious foot complications associated with long-term diabetes management.
