Reflexology
Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary health therapy involves massage and pressure techniques on the reflex areas found in the feet, hands or face. It can be very effective in promoting deep relaxation and wellbeing by reducing stress, which is a key in optimising good health.
It is a touch therapy based on the principle that reflexes in the feet, hands or face correspond to each organ and structure in the body.
When illness occurs in the body, the corresponding energy channels become blocked, and Reflexology is applied to help the body to remove these blockages, allowing the energy to flow freely again, so restoring the body’s natural balance and good health.
Reflexology can be used to help treat many conditions including:
- Digestive disorders e.g. IBS
- Migraine / headaches
- Joint / back pain
- Sleep disorders
- PMS
- Menopause
- Infertility
- Stress related conditions
- Sinus problems
- Pregnancy – after the first trimester and a valuable tool during labour and the birth process.
Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, and was practised in India and China. The therapy was introduced to the West in 1913 by ear, nose and throat surgeon Dr William Fitzgerald, who developed a system called ‘Zone therapy’. He believed that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone and used acupuncture needles on the feet to achieve anaesthesia on other areas of the body for surgery.
In the 1930’s, Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is known as reflexology.
It has been practiced in the UK since the 1960’s and has become more and more popular and established as a complementary therapy.

Pregnancy reflexology
Reflexology can be helpful when trying to conceive a baby. As well as other lifestyle changes, reflexology is thought to help the body to get ready for a pregnancy. It is also helpful during pregnancy and especially in the later stages of (37 weeks onwards) helping the body get ready for the birth.
Clients are advised to contact their reflexologist ahead if planning an appointment in their first trimester to plan their treatment care.
Facial Reflexology
Facial reflexology is a wonderful treatment as either an alternative to or combination with foot reflexology. Like foot reflexology it is very relaxing and has all the same benefits. Additionally it helps have a direct rejuvenating affect on the skin and leaves the face glowing and radiant, relieves muscle tension and improves circulation to the face and head area.
