Pregnancy Massage

Our Pregnancy Massage sessions consist of gentle Swedish massage techniques including effleurage, petrissage and gentle kneading administered by a Chartered Physiotherapist or Registered Osteopath.

This is suitable for women in the second and third trimester. These Pregnancy Massage techniques stimulate the skin, the vascular and lymphatic systems, they stimulate cellular function, improving muscle tone and improve the elimination of waste products from body tissues.

As your bump grows your body weight and centre of gravity change putting undue strain on your body. It’s common for you to become up to 15kg heavier than your normal weight in the third trimester and this change in your centre of gravity and extra body mass leads to a number of issues.

As your centre of gravity shifts your posture is affected causing lower back pain, as well as neck and shoulder pain.

Your movement becomes slower and more laboured from the extra body weight you are carrying around all day causing pain and tension to develop in your glutes, calves and feet. Changes in your circulation lead to swelling in your feet and ankles.

A pregnancy massage relieves the stress on your aching joints, eases your neck and back pain and stimulates circulation to reduce swollen ankles and painful feet. Extra care is taken to ensure both you and baby are comfortable during a Pregnancy Massage. It is not possible to lie face down as you would do in a conventional massage and your midwife will also advise you against lying flat on your back.

Your lower back, neck and shoulders will be massaged in a side lying position using pillows and towels to achieve maximum comfort and discretion. Your glutes and thighs can also be massaged in this position. Your feet ankles will be massaged with you sitting half upright in the crook sitting position.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

During pregnancy many women start to develop pubic symphysis pain, lower back pain, sacroiliac joint pain and sciatica. During a Pregnancy Massage no assessment or diagnosis of an injury will be made, If you have an injury that requires assessment and diagnosis you need to book a physiotherapy appointment.

Although a Pregnancy Massage may help these symptoms, it is aimed at managing the every day aches and pains and swelling associated with being pregnant.

The Super Deluxe Pregnancy Massage is a 90 minute massage. It is perfect if you want to indulge in a whole body treatment to relieve your aching feet and swollen ankles, ease the tension in your lower back, glutes and calves, and reduce the strain in your neck, back and shoulders. After you have had your baby we can assist you with our Deluxe Sports Massage or Deluxe Relaxing Swedish Massage or with a 1:1 Clinical Pilates session should you suffer ongoing pubic symphysis or low back pain.

The Deluxe Pregnancy Massage is a 1 hour massage. It is perfect to resolve pain and tension in your lower back and glutes, neck and shoulders as well as swelling in your feet and calves. To manage the stress and tension of pregnancy regular monthly maintenance Express Pregnancy Massage sessions are recommended until you give birth.

Our most popular Pregnancy Massage is the Express. This is perfect for you in the second and third trimester. As your bump is getting bigger you start to develop pain and tension in your lower back and glutes, neck and shoulders as well as swelling in your feet and calves. A gentle foot massage stimulates the lymphatic and circulatory systems and can help to reduce the build up of fluid in your feet and ankles, and also relieve some of the pain that you have developed in the soles and arches of your feet.

A soft tissue massage to your neck, back and shoulders helps the pain and tension that you developed from altered posture and movement as your bump gets bigger.

The Express Pregnancy Massage provides 30 minutes to relieve the tension in one of these body parts and is given by a Chartered Physiotherapist or osteopath.
