Re-opening after the COVID-19 lockdown
Following new guidance from NHS England and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (12th May 2020) we are pleased to announce that we can offer ‘face to face’ appointments from Tuesday 26th May 2020, under very strict conditions. These are as follows:
Operating a “Virtual first” approach.
You must first have a brief telephone consultation to assess your clinical needs and screen you for any additional risk factors. Anything that can be managed via a virtual consultation will then be done so. Where effective treatment cannot reasonably be carried out remotely you will be offered a face to face appointment.
After your initial face to face appointment it will be agreed between you and your therapist if any further appointments can be delivered remotely or if you will need ongoing face to face appointments.
Risk assessment of the working environment
We continue to carry out risk assessments of our clinical environment and put in place procedures to mitigate any risk. These include
- Screening all patients for COVID symptoms before they attend
- Reducing clinic capacity to ensure any patients attending can be kept 2m apart
- Hand sanitising procedures as patients enter and leave the clinical environment
- Having gaps between appointments to allow for cleaning the clinical environment
- Staggered appointments or asking patients to wait outside the clinic if necessary
- A protection screen for reception staff
- Processes for the safe disposal of PPE
We will also provide the cleanest and safest environment possible for you and our staff, which complies with current guidelines and protocols to minimise any risks of transmission of COVID-19 during treatment sessions.
Infection prevention and control measures
We will be operating a reduced service to minimise the number of patients and staff in the clinic at any one time. We will initially be offering physiotherapy, osteopathy, women’s health and podiatry appointments only.
All reasonable infection prevention and control measures are in place and compliant with Public Health England guidelines. We will be significantly increasing the level and frequency of cleaning at the clinic to minimise the risk of contamination.
All patients and staff are advised not to attend the clinic if they or someone they live with are displaying possible signs of COVID-19. This includes:
- A temperature above 37.8°C
- New continuous cough that has developed in the last 7 days
- Shortness of breath, a lack of taste or smell, headache or extreme fatigue.
You should have filled out your New Patient documentation online before attending the clinic. On entering the premises please proceed downstairs to the sink by the kitchen area and wash your hands. The toilet will out of service. Place used paper towels in the sealed bins provided. Please then use some alcohol gel on your hands and take a seat in reception.
The waiting room will be organised to ensure social distancing guidelines can be maintained and we will be removing water glasses, magazines and unnecessary leaflets from reception. The reception area will not currently be staffed to ensure social distancing.
Appointment times will be organised to reduce contact with others in the waiting area and we will be allowing 15 minutes between each appointment to thoroughly clean the treatment couch, chairs, surfaces, handles and card machine with disinfectant and to change personal protective equipment (PPE).
All appointments need to be prepaid where possible either online when you book online, or over the phone if you are booking by phone. This helps to reduce the risk of contamination by using the card machine.
Providing personal protective equipment
We will continue to follow the guidelines set out by the government and NHS England and respond to any changes to ensure we comply with all the necessary PPE protocols.
For your protection your therapist will be wearing a face mask, gloves, glasses and an apron during your treatment. We cannot provide you with any PPE and request that you source your own if you wish to use any during your appointment. We advise you to attend wearing a face covering / face mask.
Patient risk assessment and clinical reasoning
As previously indicated all initial contact will be over the phone. We will screen you to assess if you are suitable for, and explain the risk of attending a face to face appointment. We need to ensure you or anyone you live with do not have any COVID-19 symptoms. All Staff and patients will be asked not to attend if they or someone they live with develops symptoms of COVID-19.
Prior to starting your appointment we will take your temperature. If you have a temperature greater than 37.8° C we cannot treat you and will re-book your appointment. Staff will also temperature check themselves throughout their shift and will take the necessary action should they have a temperature greater than 37.8° C.
Patient consent for treatment
If after your initial screening we deem that it is necessary to see you face-to-face, we will discuss the risks of this contact with you, and all the measures that will be taken to mitigate risk, and gain your consent for treatment.
By attending a face to face appointment you must understand that although we have taken all necessary measures possible to reduce risk, due to the nature and close contact of a physiotherapy, osteopathy, women’s health or podiatry appointments there is still a risks of transmission and exposure to COVID-19.
You must be aware of the following:
The transmission of COVID-19 is thought to occur mainly through respiratory droplets generated by coughing and sneezing, and through contact with contaminated surfaces. Initial research has identified the presence of COVID-19 virus in the stools and conjunctival secretions of confirmed cases. All secretions (except sweat) and excretions, from people with known or possible COVID-19 are potentially infectious. Due to close personal contact being a part of your treatment your therapist with be wearing PPE including a face mask as previously stated.
The incubation period is from 1 to 14 days (median 5 days). Epidemiological data suggests that people may not be infectious until the onset of COVID-19 symptoms. In most cases individuals are usually considered infectious while they have symptoms.
The median time from symptom onset to clinical recovery for mild cases is approximately 2 weeks and is 3 to 6 weeks for severe or critical cases. The balance of evidence is that most people will have sufficiently reduced infectivity 7 days after the onset of symptoms.
Therefore we will screen you for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to you attending the clinic. If you have symptoms we will re-book your appointment for no less than 7 days time. On arrival in the clinic we will check your temperature. We cannot treat anyone with a temperature greater than 37.8°C.
Human coronaviruses can survive on inanimate objects and can remain viable for up to 5 days at temperatures of 22 to 25°C and relative humidity of 40 to 50% (which is typical of air- conditioned indoor environments). The treatment room will be thoroughly cleaned with disinfectant between each appointment including the treatment couch, chairs, surfaces, door handles and card machine.
Legal, regulatory and professional responsibilities
All registered health care professionals regardless of sector or setting owe a duty of care to their patients. A duty of care is a legal responsibility to provide a reasonable standard of care to patients and to act in ways that protect their safety. In reality, these are the same guidelines we acted under prior to the COVID-19 situation.
However, please be re-assured we are taking all reasonable additional steps to reduce the risk of harm to our customers and staff as far as we possibly can.
Additional measures mean we must also comply with government social distancing and shielding directives and mitigate as far as reasonably practicable the risk of transmitting COVID-19 to our patients and the wider general public, particularly to those in the vulnerable and extremely vulnerable categories.
We must also use appropriate PPE and manage any clinical areas in accordance with COVID-19 infection prevention and control regulations as previously stated.

Brilliant all round experience. After sustaining a marathon injury during training Wandsworth Physiotherapy managed to fit me in the next day and was back up and running within 2 weeks after three 30 minute sessions.
