Physiotherapy
Is an injury stopping you from doing the things you want to do?
Does this describe you?
- Is your shoulder aching when you exercises and is it painful to wash or dress?
- Do you have a strange pain in your elbow that’s agony pouring a kettle or lifting objects – and you don’t even play tennis!?
- Is your knee swelling up from time to time and it’s now starting to get sore each morning?
- Are you getting headaches that put you back to bed?
- Are you waking with a stiff and sore foot and it feels like you have a pebble in your shoes?
- Have you been exercising more and you’ve tweaked a muscle in your calf or hamstring and you now can’t keep exercising?
At Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy, in all our clinics in Wandsworth Town, Clapham Junction and Battersea Nine Elms, our highly experienced team of physiotherapists treat people just like you every day and help them get back to what they love doing without the fear of further aches and pain
Our specialist clinics:
Your initial appointment with the physiotherapist will be 30 minutes. In that time you will be asked to explain your injury, how it happened, how long you have had it and how it makes you feel.
You will be asked to set some goals about what you want to achieve from your time spent with the therapist. Your physiotherapist will also run through your past medical history finding out about any medical diagnoses or medicine that you take.
Next your physiotherapist will carry out a physical examination looking at the affected area plus carry out an assessment of your posture and how you move.
Once they have carried out this assessment they will put together a treatment plan for you.
In the remaining time of your initial assessment and on subsequent treatment sessions they will carry out this treatment plan and also give you home exercises to do to either resolve your problem or to give you a management strategy to keep your symptoms under control.
Your therapist will endeavour to give you an accurate diagnosis and give you realistic expectations of how many treatments you will require to get better.
Most problems can be resolved within 4 to 6 treatment sessions. On occasion your therapist may refer you to a consultant for a second opinion to verify the initial diagnosis and treatment plan or explore other treatment options such as injections or surgery.
Your therapist may also refer you to other healthcare professionals that they feel would be appropriate to help you.
This may include a Pilates instructor, massage therapist, acupuncturists, nutritionist, women’s health specialist, osteopath or yoga instructor.

What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a discipline involving the hands-on treatment of injuries and the prescription of rehabilitation exercises to help people overcome their pain and dysfunction.
Most physiotherapists start their training and career in the NHS working across a wide area of disciplines.
These include working with people who have had major traumas, broken bones or surgery; working with amputees or people with spinal cord injuries; and people with chronic degenerative injuries, back pain or sports injuries.
Physiotherapists look at your movement, posture and function, identifying faults in these areas and working on ways to improve them with hands on treatment and exercise.
Contrary to popular belief physiotherapists do not just treat muscles, or sports injuries – we treat the entire body improving spinal and joint movement, nerve mobility, the flexibility of muscle and fascia and by improving strength and muscle control through exercise. Physiotherapists may also use adjuncts to treatment such as tape, acupuncture or electrotherapy such as ultrasound, TENs or muscle stimulation.
