Osteopathy for Children & Babies

Our osteopaths specialises in paediatrics using a combination of structural, cranial and visceral osteopathy for treating new born babies and children. They use very gentle osteopathic techniques to correct problems that could have occurred (to mum and baby) during a difficult or prolonged delivery. As the baby is pushing through the birth canal their soft skull is predisposed to a great deal of pressure that can create problems at a later date.

Many babies are born by caesarean section or using tools such as ventouse or forceps. This can  lead to tension in the neck and shoulders or altered shape of the head. A quick or prolonged delivery can also lead to problems. Normally these are resolved within the first few days as the baby starts to breathe, cry, suck and yawn. However, some babies find it a bit more difficult to release all these stresses and their tension may remain.

We treat babies with a wide range of issues such as assistance after a traumatic birth, breastfeeding and latch issues, and digestive issues. However, we are also here to support you with any concerns you may have during different stages of growth and the development of your child, right the way through to growing pains and teenage sports injuries. We are comfortable managing complex cases and recognising any symptoms that may need onward referral.

Parents bring their babies to see our Osteopaths at Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy for:

  • A New Born Baby check up (a 6 week check up is recommended)
  • A postural assessment
  • Any digestive issues (colic, reflux, constipation or difficulty passing wind)
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Difficulty Latching and feeding
  • Plagiocephaly (flattening of the head)
  • Congenital torticolis

Ready to Make a Change?

At Wandsworth Physiotherapy & Osteopathy we're focused on getting you out of pain and back to what you love doing, from simply sitting comfortably to playing with your kids, getting back into the gym or being able to run 5k again, our expert Physiotherapists, Podiatrists & Osteopaths are here to help!

All appointments are secured with payment. All appointments cancelled within 24 hours of the start time or not attended will not be refunded.

What to expect…

In your initial appointment with the osteopath you can explain the problems your child is suffering from and how it makes them feel. Your osteopath run through any relevant past medical history finding out about any medical diagnoses or medicine they take.

Next your osteopath will carry out a physical examination of your child looking at any affected areas plus carry out an assessment of relevant postures or movement patterns. Once they have carried out this assessment they will put together a treatment plan for your child or baby. Osteopaths that work with children and babies tend to look at the body from a structural and cranial  perspective, assessing their body alignment and how their spine moves and where there might be restrictions that need to be treated.

In the remaining time of your initial assessment and on subsequent treatment sessions your osteopath will carry out this treatment plan and also give you advice and exercises that you can do with your child at home. Your osteopath will endeavour to give you an accurate diagnosis, realistic expectations of how many treatments will be required and you will leave with a written diagnosing and treatment plan. Most problems can be resolved within 4 to 6 treatment sessions. On occasion your therapist may refer you and you child to a GP or consultant for a second opinion to verify the initial diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • All children and babies osteopathy assessment and treatments sessions are 1 hour

Paediatric osteopathy sessions are slightly longer than for our other osteopathy sessions. This allows time for baby to settle and adjust to this new experience.

Is Osteopathy Safe?

Osteopaths that work with children and babies use very gentle hands on techniques to help resolve their problems. Most osteopaths do not use spinal manipulation on children so you needn’t worry that they will “crack” your child’s neck or back.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a form of osteopathy aiming to gently release these stresses and tension within the babies body. This is an approach where light pressure of the hands is used to find and ease the movement and rhythm of the body tissues. This way we are encouraging the body’s self-healing mechanism and corrective capabilities. The aim of all this is to improve the body’s function in a non-invasive way.

Additional information

We would appreciate it if you could bring milk or finger food with babies and toddlers, as well as a favourite toy or dummy to entertain them during the session. If you are comfortable with it, it is possible to treat your baby whilst they are being fed.

If you have any concerns about your child and want to see if paediatric osteopathy can help, or have any questions before making an appointment please call 020 3322 9455 or e-mail info@wandsworthphysiotherapy.co.uk.

Brilliant all round experience. After sustaining a marathon injury during training Wandsworth Physiotherapy managed to fit me in the next day and was back up and running within 2 weeks after three 30 minute sessions. Gave me exercises to go away and do in my own time too so felt like I was making the most of their and my time too.

These guys are fantastic! Really quick to reply and they found me an appointment on the same day. I've since had regular treatments with Alessio who is excellent, and my torn IT band, shoulder and other ailments are much improved. Brilliant for both sports injuries and wellness.

Gerry Sweetland

Booked an appointment for the same day on a Saturday. Adele has been very welcoming and helpful, providing useful advice as well as efficient treatment. Great local clinic, will definitely come back and recommend.

Steve was excellent. Long term/complex shoulder injury treated over a number of sessions - patient, curious and methodical. Great treatments and programme of exercises and I'm back to pain free swimming.

~ Nick Outlaw

I've been several times for several different problems and Steve has always been excellent. He listens really carefully and asks good questions to find out exactly what's wrong, and is very clear with follow-up exercises to continue the therapy at home. Highly recommend him!

Rogel referred me to a consultant before treating me as he wanted to rule out a frozen shoulder before he started physiotherapy. His suspicion of my having a frozen shoulder was correct. This allowed me to get the correct diagnosis and corresponding treatment done quickly and efficiently.

I can't recommend this place and Physio Shreya enough! 10 weeks go I got referred to Wandsworth Physiotherapy by a friend after I was suffering with chronic neck and back pain. Shreya immediately found the cause, diagnosed me, and assured me of what the next steps would be. Not only does Shreya have healing hands, she continuously helped me mentally. After all of the advice, exercises, and dry needling, I am now pain free and able to return to my everyday activities (including exercise). Thank you Shreya, you are incredible!

This place is great! I got here with a really bad pain in my shoulder and neck and I got better really fast. I got treated by Shreya, who is AMAZING. Really good therapist, doing a mix of techniques to relieve pain, and also really empathetic. She id also specialised in sports, which means she was able to advise on how I can continue my regular workouts, despite my pain. I am always looking forward to my sessions here and I can see great progress with my injury. 10/10 would recommend!

Christina has been treating some issues with my neck, back and shoulders for 18 months now and she is the best physiotherapist I’ve ever had. She is a miracle worker with massage but also educates me about posture, injury prevention and the best forms of exercise and injury care. She is A-MAZING.

I've had about 8 sessions at Wandsworth Physiotherapy. Rogel did an amazing job and has been able to help me with the tendinopathy I've had for about 2 years! He created a plan especially for my own goal. I've had shockwave therapy, some exercises to do and advices on the sport I could do and when. Great place!

Was booked in with Rogel for a shoulder injury that has been a long term problem impacting my ability to do sport. Over 5 sessions I have seen significant improvement and have been given the tools to continue to get stronger. Hoping to book in with him again for a knee injury as well. Prarthi has been absolutely fantastic at helping me to recover from a shoulder injury over the last few months. My pain had dramatically reduced after the first session and she has continued to help throughout. She is extremely knowledgeable and has really helped me to understand the mechanics of my injury. I cannot recommend her enough! Thanks so much :)
